The document interpretation assignment #2 I did on “Of the Servants and Slaves of Virginia” helped me improve my critical thinking skills. In order to do this assignment I had to read and analyze a document so that I can interpret it at the end of my reading. I was able to understand it and summarize its content but after reading my professor’s feedback I realized that I needed to do more than just analyze the document itself.  The purpose of this assignment was not to only read and understand the article but also find its connection to the course materials we went over that week, which I unfortunately failed to do. I needed to look at the bigger picture of it and find its connection to our History and how it affected it. I feel that I need to improve in that particular area and try to focus on the bigger picture of it and not just that ONE article. I need to learn how to “relate the CONTENT to its CONTEXT” like my professor said.

If I could do this particular assignment again I would definitely try to make a bigger connection of the article to our course materials, I would also invest more time working on it so that I can make sure I get everything right. Looking back, I realize that I didn’t put too much effort on it like I should have, I kind of tried to get it over with quick, rather than taking my time.  I definitely need to practice my time management skills. I am usually very busy with work, and being a mom/housewife that when I get free time all I want to do is relax, but I need to stop procrastinating and instead of relaxing I need to spend more time in my online courses. Another thing that I need to work on would be finding a connection between articles that are given to us for us to read, and course materials. I am good at understanding both, but there is times that I have a hard time explaining how 2 things relate to one another.

In a way I am glad that we are doing these Document Interpretation assignments because I know that they will help me develop more skills and in my future classes I will have a better understanding on how to do certain things and therefore I will get better grades. I think reading more about our history or even watching history movies in my free time can help me with my future projects in this particular class.
