Essay: Reflection

Out of everything that I have learned throughout my experience in Geography 2, my two favorite ideas would definitely be the concept of constructive identity and the discussions on language. These were not the only ideas which I liked this semester, but they hold more meaning to me, particularly because they have some relation to my major: international relations. I’ve already tried using the concept of identity and how it is constructed individually, whether it is as a person or a whole country, for one of my essays. The discussions on language and how they develop, as well as how slang develops language, is something I found particularly interesting because I love learning new phrases and languages; learning how words have developed makes me unreasonably excited; it’s slightly embarrassing to be honest. We learned the concept of constructing identity through several methods: we had a discussion as well as it being included on one of the exams, but it was explained most clearly in your lecture. The development and discussion of language was mainly featured in a podcast from discussion 11 in which there was an interview of a renowned linguist, John McWhorter. Aside from these informative methods, the other online lectures were also something which I found to be profoundly educational, it was mainly because the information was both visual and audible with the help of diagrams and images which made it very easy to understand. The book was also a useful instrument throughout the semester which was irreplaceable in the face of reading quizzes and tests. I personally learned a lot more than I thought I was going to learn, so the course has satisfied my personal learning goals, although I did independent research several times in the semester – sometimes for assignments, sometimes for individual interest. But the course did develop my understanding of Geography and what the study entails. It was also through the projects that I realized how geologists in the field would have to constantly prepare presentations and studies to promote their ideas and research. My personal performance in the course was lackluster with the combination of unrelenting time restraints between work, school organizations, and coursework, as well as perpetual deadlines. My only regret for the course is that I wish I had been an hour quicker or I’d looked more in depth about the assignments so that I would not have missed any assignments.
