On Groups: For Teachers of this Course
ABOUT THE GROUPS
We couldn't actually randomly set up your groups for you because there are no students in the class. BUT you can set up your own random groupings once your students are enrolled, or you can have students self-select.
We have incorporated a "Model Group" set up for you to copy and paste for your other groups.
There are 3 groups for this course:
- A weekly cohort group that they work with all semester
- A self-select grammar and style group they work with for two weeks
- A randomly-assigned Research Group they work with for two weeks
These multiple groups are Best Practices--they allow for students to have a rich learning experience with multiple students in the course.
- A Groups Feature tutorial will be completed with your training facilitator, and there are 2 video tutorials in UNIT 2 for how to use groups (for students and for teachers).
You can also view the following video which will give you a nice, 15-minute overview of Canvas Course Building in general.

If you'd like more info for why I think you should use groups, visit my personal google doc on the issue. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-F4zBejtTsORCfFS72UxL5gLXJUpny-fVCR-YtSzk5c/edit?usp=sharing Links to an external site.
We highly recommend groups to save your grading sanity.
Enjoy!
