Benefits of online therapy during pandemic

The first big advantage of doing virtual therapy is the fact that you don't need to leave your home to meet the psychologist. At a time when reduced mobility and social distance are fundamental to overcoming Covid-19, a video call with the therapist is a great solution to talk and vent about life's anxieties.

But, it does not stop there. Among the benefits of online therapy we can highlight:

  • Convenience: There is no need to travel to the meeting, it can be held in the place that is most comfortable for you;
  • Confidentiality: No one, apart from you and the therapist, needs to know about online consultations, and you have complete intimacy to open up with the psychologist;
  • Freedom of choice: It is possible to provide online consultations with professionals from other states, expanding the patient's choice and escaping from cycles of friendship;
  • More accessible values: Virtual assistance is usually much more affordable than face-to-face assistance, and it is possible to find professionals who are providing assistance free of charge during the pandemic.

How is online therapy?

In general, online therapy works in the same way as the traditional modality, with face-to-face meetings. If you are already following up with a psychologist, just talk to him to make the online meetings possible.

Now, if you still don't have a therapist to call your own, just look for a qualified psychologist and make an appointment. At the appointed time, you and the psychologist will meet in a private video call and will stay there until the end of the session.

Meetings usually take place on platforms like Skype, Google Meet and Zoom, but there are apps that directly connect patients to professionals. The session progresses according to the therapeutic line you have chosen for yourself (Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Jungian Analysis, Behaviorism, etc.).

How to do therapy online?

Okay, having said the benefits of doing therapy, what does it take to have quality virtual therapy sessions?

First, you need to have an electronic device that has internet access. It can be the notebook, the tablet or even the smartphone; it depends on what you prefer.

Once you've chosen your device, always have a good headset at hand. Why? For three very simple reasons:

  • The first is that the headphones provide an up-time connection to the call (improving the microphone and audio input and output);
  • The second is that the items prevent you from being distracted by local noises;
  • And the third is that the headphones give you more privacy (no one will listen to your therapist's advice).

Speaking of privacy, if you can't be alone at home for online therapy, here's one more tip: close your bedroom door and turn your Spotify or Apple Music on at a pleasant volume, just to muffle your voice on rest of the house!

In addition to physical resources, for online therapy it is very important to have a good internet connection. Can you imagine wasting part of your session time with frozen images and cut audios? We don't want this!

But to have even more freedom and to be able to choose the place where to undergo the virtual therapy (in case you are not at home, or prefer to carry out the sessions elsewhere), all you need to do is ensure a good mobile internet plan.

Among so many changes that the pandemic brought to us, mental health care is perhaps one of the greatest lessons learned at the moment, isn't it? Online therapy has expanded, and with the right tools, you can find relief and comfort wherever you are.
