At the beginning of this semester, I really had no idea what to expect. From my own perception, I always just saw Geography as just another obstacle to overcome before getting my A.A. – I guess that’s why I saved it for last. Ironically though, it was probably one of the best ideas I’ve had. At this point in my education “path” I’ve gained a significant skill of appreciation when it comes to the world of learning. After years of struggling with courses you do not necessarily enjoy, maturity eventually sets in and you learn to approach courses with an open mind. This is exactly what I did with the online Geography course and as I write my final essay reflection of the year, I can honestly say that I gained a special enjoyment towards the world of Geography.

            The ability to view the world as a science, rather than just as “the world” is amazing. Thanks to this class, I am now able to travel the world and read articles that describe the way the earth is changing. And most importantly be able to see the reality of how old the earth really is. The mountains we hike today are like the Elders of Mother Nature. So are the trees that accompany such beauty.

            Reading geographic articles in the Newspaper will now be more fun and comprehensive. It gives more worldly knowledge to conversations I may have. I must say that my favorite assignments were the map sets. It forced me out of my comfort zone and how to use maps and Google earth and interpret changes of the earths surface. As well as the Lithosphere, Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere concepts. The earth is a vast idea in itself and I really enjoyed learning and understanding ideas about it. The eearthquake kits were also a favorite assignment. I am now ready and prepared for the next big disaster. Los Angeles is a great place to live, but this course opened my eyes to the reality of the dangers it holds.

            I would like to thank Dr. Rhea Presiado for putting together such an amazing class and curriculum. I’ve never taken such an interactive online class. I’ve truly learned so much.
