PopeTech and Ally

Two hands (one symbolizing pope tech and the other symbolizing ally) in a hand-shake, with the text "Better Together"

We now have two powerful tools to help you improve the accessibility of your course content. Because they each have unique strengths in different areas, we recommend that you use Pope Tech and Blackboard Ally together

What does each tool do best?

Pope Tech Instructor Accessibility Guide Blackboard Ally

Best for:

  • Fixing Canvas content (Page, Syllabus, Quiz description, Discussion topic, Assignment, or Announcement):
    • Images
    • Headings
    • Tables
    • Text Contrast
    • Text formatting and other HTML issues

Best for:

  • Identifying and fixing accessibility issues in documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Providing students with accessible alternatives
  • Viewing overall course accessibility

Does it matter which one I use first?

We highly recommend using Pope Tech Instructor Accessibility guide first.  Most Canvas-related issues can be resolved more easily with Pope Tech. Additionally, using Pope Tech before Ally to add image descriptions can help you avoid one potential issue in Ally.  After you've cleaned up errors with Pope Tech, then use Ally to address document issues with your PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, etc.
