When you are considering purchasing a mattress, there are lots of options and factors you need to look into. Today, there are various types of mattresses available having different materials and firmness ratings to choose from. There are also factors like your weight, your size, and your sleeping position which you need to consider while buying a mattress. In this article, we shall discuss the various types of mattresses that are available and the necessary points you need to consider to land on the mattress of your choice.

Different Types Of Mattresses

There are a few popular and best-selling mattresses. They are memory foam, innerspring, hybrid, latex, futon, air mattress, water mattress, etc. We shall provide you the details of each variant and its features so that you can find out which one is fit for your bedroom.

  • Memory Foam: This mattress type was first invented to provide better seat cushioning in airplanes to protect passengers from plane crashes. They are still used in airplanes but they are now used for domestic purposes as well. The material in a memory foam mattress serves as padding for the back and also disperses the body weight evenly over the surface. Those with aches in their body or pain in the joints can be benefitted from a memory foam mattress. This material is also designed to keep you warm while you sleep on the bed after it comes in touch with your body temperature. The memory foam mattress is also resistant to bacteria and allergens and thus you need not worry about the mold, bugs, or mites infesting your bed.
  • Innerspring Mattress: They are the oldest and most popular mattress type. In this model, a steel coil support is used to provide support while you sleep. The coils can either be connected or individually wrapped while giving you a bouncier feel. They are also covered in padding or upholstery that provides much-needed comfort and support.
  • Hybrid Mattress: They are the latest addition to the list of mattress types and are a combination of memory foam and innerspring technology made to provide support, durability, and comfort. In a hybrid pattern, you would be able to experience less motion transfer while you sleep, thus ensuring a comfortable sleep. And since the upper layer is topped with foam, your bed would be free from dust, bugs, and mites.
  • Latex Mattress: These types of mattresses were invented in the 1930s and used to be one of expensive mattresses in those times. Today, with the advancement in technology, these mattresses have become affordable for the common man. They are mostly made from plant or petroleum-based materials and provide a comfortable surface. They keep the pressure off from areas like the hips and shoulders and help you sleep in proper alignment. They are a great choice for people having lower back pain.
  • Air Mattress: These mattresses are mostly used for camping and you can adjust your desired firmness with these types of mattresses thus providing you a great sleeping experience even when you are not at your home. The air chamber of these mattresses is covered by padding and upholsteries like memory foam, latex, etc for a smooth base for sleeping.
  • Waterbeds: These types of beds were very much popular in the 70s and the 80s and provide support through a water chamber system. They are covered with padding made of foam or fiber.
  • Futon Mattress: A futon mattress can work as both mattress and a sofa cushion. These variants are very much beneficial for people who have very limited space in their rooms and are a great option for studio apartments.

So while these are some of the types of mattress you can choose from, size is also a few factors that need to be kept in mind while you are making a purchase.
