I believe that we are definitely a society of consumers. I have always thought that no matter what kind of phone, or car or even clothes we buy we will always have the need to buy more and newer stuff. Every year new things come out and we suddenly become unsatisfied with what we have. If we really stop to think about it, we will never win. There will always be something newer than what we currently have (even if we've only had it for a few months) because that is what these industries are doing, they continue to make new things just to get more money out of us. I think the way our society has changed over the years make people want to fit in more, therefore they want to be up to date with the latest trends and they become extreme consumers.
One of the main consequences that come from us consuming too much is that we can end up in debt. We might be able to buy certain things here and there but then we will start wanting to buy more things and start using credit cards a lot more often than we should and eventually we can end up in serious debt because of it. Some people can even become addicted to this, they can become shopaholics, every commercial they see that want to go out and buy whatever is being advertised. Society might not realize it but they are becoming slaves to all of these things.
I think in order for us to learn how to consume we first have to realize that we don’t always need to buy the next iPhone or Galaxy that is coming out. We need to learn how to distinguish our needs from our wants. We don't really need a new phone if ours is working just fine, we might think we do but we don’t. We need to stop having that desire to fit in or to have what others have. We can also learn to consume by comparing prices, for example, you don’t need to spend over $100 on headphones when you can buy some that will work just fine for about $20 or less. Restraint might be something very hard for some people, specially for young adults. In my opinion, the younger you are the more you want to have things everyone else has. I do believe that is possible to resist our consumer temptation however. We just have to focus on the real priorities we need to have in life. Like saving for our future, investing in things that are more important like your own home for example.
Hello Rene, i totally agree with you. All these cell phone companies do is change minor things in the phones and come up with "new" ones every year or so and people right away buy into it. I do believe that the advertisements target every member of a society and we need to become aware of that. Like I said on my response as well, we might think we "NEED" new things but we don't. We have to try to spend less money on unnecessary things and invest in our future instead.
Good morning Cassandra, I agree with your opinion on this. I also think in part is true what the video said about things not lasting longer than 1 to 2 years... but they don't necessarily need to stop working for people to get the newer model. Even if your phone works after 1 year you will automatically become unsatisfied when you see the new upgrades on another phone. Same thing goes with cars, more people are leasing cars because they don't see themselves driving the same model for more than 2 or 3 years. What they don't realize is that they are spending a lot more leasing cars and they will never actually own a car of their own. You become a slave to car payments.
