The article I read this week for my Document interpretation assignment was: “Proclamation of Neutrality” written by George Washington in April 22, 1793. This article is a Primary Source, and the author is proclaiming a state of neutrality from the United States. I believe that George Washington wanted to address every American citizen to let them know that he would not protect anyone that was involved with the European War. This source is credible and accurate because it is something that George Washington himself wrote for the congress and it was created to show Americans where George Washington stood in this war. This article is valuable to us because it basically shows us our 1st president’s point of view regarding the European war.
George Washington and his cabinet members thought the United States’ nation was, at the time, too young, that they didn’t have enough money, and that they were not strong enough to face a battle like this. Therefore George Washington refused to protect any Americans who aided the warring nations, it was the duty and interest of the United States to have a friendly conduct towards the belligerent powers. Part of the belligerent Powers were Austria, Prussia, Sardinia, Great Britain, and the United Netherlands against France. From my point of view, George Washington made a good decision because I don’t think America should have been involved in something that didn’t involve them directly. Also I think that they were right to let people know that they would not be getting any aid from the government if they were to get involved in the war.
Hello Judith, after reading your document interpretation I had the chance to understand this article without personally reading it. I don't agree with Fitzhugh saying negroes chose to be slaves and its their fault they became enslaved, I mean, who in their right mind would choose to be a slave? No one. He was trying to justify this by MISINTERPRETING the bible but the bible never says anything about whites being better than black people
Hi Lujia, I also did my document interpretation on this article. I agree with you when you say George Washington's decision was smart. I definitely think if we would've got involved in the European War we would have been defeated right away
