“A careful analysis of the teacher-student relationship at any level inside or outside the school reveals its fundamental narrative character. (143)

This means that the process of learning through communication is inherently narrative by definition. This means in communication concerning reading or writing in any situation is a narrative.

“I became increasingly frustrated at not being able to express what I wanted to convey in letters that I wrote, especially those to Mr. Elijah Muhammad.” (256)

This quote is a narrative because its about writing. It’s important because it show the frustration of not being able to write clearly and the power that can be gained by learning to read and write.

“When he finally finished, after what seemed like hours, my father looked up and asked: “Where can we get more copies of this for the relatives” (77)

It’s a narrative because it’s about Ms. Cisneros story, and her father’s reaction to reading the story. It’s important because she receives validation from her most important critic, her father.

DB 8.2 Integrating Quotes

I couldn’t find a quote suggested by the class or myself that truly suited the purpose of my narrative so I added a quote from Paulo Freire’s essay, The “Banking” Concept of Education, “Readings for Revolutionary Writers”.

“Worse yet, it (the narration) turns them (students) into “containers,” into “receptacles” to be “filed” by teachers.”, Paulo Freire (144)

To me, this quote demonstrates how current pedagogy objectifies students. Students are not taught to think they are taught to memorize and regurgitate like a computer.

Post 2

My educational process didn’t start until I entered college. Before that I was just a “container” a “receptacle” to be “filled” by the teacher. Early on I realized the key to success was the ability to memorize and regurgitate on cue. No need for questions. No thinking required. What’s the purpose? There were no challenges. School became a necessary regiment. Once I entered college, I was totally unprepared for the realization that I had to use my brain for purposes much more complex than memorization and regurgitation. The shock of using my brain to create, contemplate, question and understand was exhilarating. I couldn’t wait to begin.
