Pipher, Mary.” Cooling Down--- Revising” Writing to Change the World (2006): 149-163. Riverside Books

Mary’s essay describes revision as an engaging and creative process. She the steps needed to revise an essay which includes stepping away from the writing, reading your work aloud, having others critique your essay, looking for points of contention and most importantly putting yourself in your reader’s shoes.  Stepping away from your work takes you out of the role of a writer and allows you time to assess your writing from a reader’s point of view. Very useful in you establishing a critical view of what you have written. Most important is getting a perspective from other people. They can enlighten you to what’s lacking, what’s overblown, what’s condescending and can suggest new ideas or approaches which might be useful. I especially agree with the idea that revision is a creative and engaging. I n the process of revising, I find myself constantly rewriting sentences and paragraphs to clarify and refine what I am trying to say. I am learning to concentrate on the flow of my words to make sure that my essay is cohesive and logical. I need more work, but I found this piece to be invaluable.

Malcolm X. “Coming to an Awareness of Language” Readings for Revolutionary Writing (2013): 252-255, Bedford/St. Martin’s

Malcolm’s essay was about his epiphany, that he was illiterate and the steps he took to resolve this issue. This essay is great example of a literary narrative. I t is about Malcolm’s quest to learn how to read and write, a key feature of a literary native. It includes colorful details about the process and the result of the process of Malcolm’s voyage. Both of which are key features of a literary narrative. I found myself more interested in Malcolm’s story. A key to a good literary narrative is a good story and Malcolm’s essay supplies that.
