Discussing definitions that writers Natalie Goldberg, Mary Pipher, the Revolutionary Writers, Paula Gunn Allen, Joan Didion, Annie Dillard, Peter Elbow and Anne Lamott have in common with the Authentic Voice essay is difficult. Instead I chose to focus on the techniques the writers used to find their voice. Each author used different techniques to get their writing started. The  techniques involve finding their true feelings about the subject. Peter Elbow used the techniques of freewriting and desperation writing to stir up memories and ideas. Paula Allen used observations and lessons past down through generations to come up with ideas. Joan Didion used  inert fragments of memories to find herself. Annie Dillard sought a unperturbed vision to find her truth. Anne Lamott just wrote a “Shitty First Draft”. The effect of these techniques was to get a start by touching upon your memories, experiences, values and the things that make you you. The authors also suggested ways to handle your demons that might impede your progress. You can let the mouse people rant until you tire of them and put them away in a jar as Anne Lamont suggested. You can counter their noise by remembering your past to regain your self esteem  as Paula Allen does or you can just freewrite like Peter Elbow. Conquer your demons and find your voice.

I never really thought about the mode of expressing myself. In many cases song, art or prose may be the best way to tell a story. Thanks for enlightening me.

You had a good point in evaluating the quote, "Of course the road goes both ways". I had to re-read that section. Your writing does reflect who you are.
