Adding VoiceThreads To Your Canvas Course
You can add VoiceThreads to your Canvas course in several ways:
- External Tool Assignment
- External Tool link in a Module
- Create Link in the Rich Content Editorr
External Tool Assignment
This is the method you’ll need to choose if you want the VoiceThread to be a graded item that syncs with the Canvas gradebook. (Note: If you aren't familiar with creating assignments in Canvas, you may want to view this overview video Links to an external site..)
VoiceThread allows you to create three different types of graded activities:
- Create: Students are required to make a VoiceThread using a video, image, document or presentation.
- Comment: Students are required to make a comment on a VoiceThread
- Watch: Students just watch or listen to an entire VoiceThread

- First, create a new Assignment in Canvas, and choose "External Tool" from the Submission Type dropdown menu.
- Click the Find button to open a list of available External Tools.
- Scroll down in the Configure External Tool window and select VoiceThread from the list of tools.
- Once you select the VoiceThread option, you will be logged in to the VoiceThread system and a new "VoiceThread Setup" window will open allowing you to continue linking your specific content through the VoiceThread interface. In the case of the External Tool assignment, you will most likely be choosing the Assignment Builder option.
- Once you have set up your VoiceThread assignment, you can complete the assignment setup in Canvas and save your assignment. You will see that the VoiceThread has been successfully included in the instructions.
External Tool Link in a Module
- Add a new item to a module, and select the "External Tool" item type from the dropdown menu in the Add Item to My Module window.
- Scroll through the list of available tools and select VoiceThread.
- Once you select the VoiceThread option, you will be logged in to the VoiceThread system and a new window will open allowing you to continue linking your specific content through the VoiceThread interface.

Create Link in the Rich Content Editor
Any Canvas tool that uses the Rich Content Editor - Announcements, Assignments, Discussions. Pages, Quizzes, etc. - will allow you to easily create a link to a VoiceThread using the External Apps menu options.
- Create a new content item, then use one of two options to open the External Apps in the Rich Content Editor:
1. Click Tools, then Apps, then View All.
2. Click the Apps plug icon in the toolbar. - This will open the All Apps list. Just scroll down this list and click on VoiceThread.
Note: After you have selected an app from this list, Canvas will remember and you should see a shortcut the next time you access the Tools>Apps menu or click the toolbar button. - When you select VoiceThread from the apps list, the "VoiceThread Setup" window will open allowing you to continue linking your specific content through the VoiceThread interface.
