Goal #2: Your First-Year Plan

The Academic Year at PCC

PCC uses a “semester” system academic calendar.  This means that students take the majority of their classes during the 16 week Fall and Spring Semesters. Because classes during longer semesters are spread out over 16 weeks, students often choose to take multiple classes at once to help get them towards their goals.

PCC will be offering Winter sessions again, starting Winter 2024. Winter sessions are similar to Summer sessions: 6 to 8 weeks, and 1 or 2 classes are typically taken during the Winter sessions.

First-Year Plan

Below is an example of what a first-year educational plan could look like.  An educational plan is your guide for which classes you will eventually take. It is not yet your registration, but it will be useful when you can register for your classes. After this online workshop, you will be meeting with a counselor to design an educational plan that works for you.

In this example, the student decided not to take any classes in the Summer before the first semester but has chosen to attend the Summer after Spring.

As you can see, this student plans to enroll in English 1A, Math (Stats 50 with the support class), College 1, and History in the first Fall Semester for a total of 14.5 units. As a reminder, the Summer intersession is only 6 weeks, so it is recommended to only take 1-2 classes. Finally, in the Spring, the student will continue taking more classes to work towards the goal of transferring. The Spring plan included the second part of English, a GE class under IGETC Area 4, and a History and Political Science class for their major.
